I think not. It becomes a major issue for elections, when millions of people can't read and write at a level necessary to learn and participate in, elections. I recall recently that the US is 34th in literacy/education amongst developed nations.
Enjoying life: Literacy is essential to truly enjoy life and communicating in a complex world.
The Middle East: Americans should know as much or more about the Middle East than they know about us. I think we are failing in that department as well.
Uneducated voters seem to be infulenced by two or three buzz words, e.g. Romney was an executive, a governor, and ran the Olympics in Salt Lake City. What, if anything does this have to do with electing a president based upon an informed opinion and participation? How can a large number of illiterates function in today's world? What is wrong with our education system? Why do we pay teachers less than they deserve, and why do we have such low test scores and why do teachers rebel when their performance evaluation is linked to test performance of students? Why are schools falling apart and crowded? Why do we allow corporations like Goldman Sachs to own huge "certificate mills" whether online or onsite, when the government is paying them billions in tuition and fees for "training" that leaves one baffled as to actual job placement numbers? Media has reported these types of schools recruiting homeless people to get even more money from government grants and loans. Why do the top colleges and universities have billions of dollars in endowments while making their turition and fees out of reach? What are we waiting for? Do we want to be last on the list concerning education amongst developed nations. I feel positive that Cuba is more literate than the United States.
It appears that we are about as interested in improving K-12 nationally, asap, as we are in raising entitlemnents to dependent, filthy beggars that don't have the self-sufficiency to get a job. We have been falling behind for years and years and years. We have 2 million in gangs (100,000 in Los Angeles alone), 2 million in jails and prisons and a crisis in dealing with Mexican Border guns and drugs and murders.
While millions beat the drum about tax incentives to the rich, to stimulate the economy, we should be investing in our children. Obama is much more likely to invest in our childrens' future, than is Romney.
