Fox News: In Response To The New Jobless Rate, Romney Discovers For The First Time That People Are Struggling On Food Stamps To Feed Families

It appears that for the first time in the campaign, Romney is "concerned" about the poor.  I dispute the 50 million poor figure, as half of the country's 160 million workers and 40 million seniors make less than the median income of $50,000, which in today's world makes most of them poor, absolutely if they have families.  Where is the validation and support for the majority of "these" workers who make less than a fair wage, get no significant raises or advancement opportunity, no pensions, no 401 K, no health plans if they are part-time (8.4 M reported today), yet they do their best in a brutal, thankless workplace where many work in constant fear of being fired, spyed on or harrassed. Bloomberg News recently posted that 96% of Americans are dependent upon the government.

If Romney can campaign about $5 trillion in tax cuts skewed toward the rich over the next ten years as being a viable way of erasing the deficit and jobless rate, then I can suggest that instead, we double the federal minimum wage, which enables workers to be self-sufficient, pay 30-40% of their income on rent, rather than more than half their income, be able to consider having two kids, and they would STILL qualify for WIC and even foodstamps in many cases.  Congress has cow-towed to corporate lobbyists for too long.  I'm tired of hearing about free enterprise and small business opportunities saving the economy-many of them would not be in business if they paid a fair wage.  Not too long ago someone with $50,000 income and perfect credit could get a mortgage-now the American Dream for most people is completely out of reach unless they are already homeowners in good standing with the mortgage holder.  In Romney's own words, let businesses fail if they can't cut it.

The likelihood of doubling the federal minimum wage is nill.  Congress has an excellent health care package and enjoys legalized insider trading, while the middle class has been going downhill for thirty years and the median income is the lowest since 1995 (FT.com 9/12/12).  Without Obama's plans, the country will sink deeper into debt and the American Dream will remain a myth.  Romney is a demon about small government and has no empathy until today, about the poor, because it is politically expedient for him to speak about the poor.
