The median income of Americans is $50,054 according to a NYT post on 9/12/12, meaning that half the poulation makes less and half makes more. The Huffington Post on 9/12/12 cites that the census reports 46.2 million people in poverty. Of course that actual number in poverty is higher, becaue the census is not perfect and neither are the poverty guidelines.
A couple with two children, at the median income level, allowing for two kids at $1200 each, per month is in poverty, even though their rent is approximately 30% of their gross income. The guideline for HUD is 30% of income to be paid on rent, although the program cannot help all those who require it.
So the median income is the lowest in nearly 20 years.
