Obama has had personal tragedy in his life. He has volunteered to walk your dog or mow your lawn if it would help negotiations. He has helped people on the street rather than meeting bragging about meeting a Navy Seal and being told to shut up by the mother; or Ryan having a "friend" who is a reservist Biden has a son who served a year in Iraq.. Biden also has had tragedy, losing his first wife and a son. Biden's passion for the middle class overshadows Ryan saying they both grew up in similar circumstances. Both are Catholics, and Biden respects the church and the choice of women/doctors to deal with abortion. Ryan has adopted the party line on abortion. Romney has changed his position on abortion and is now advocating limited abortions.
R/R seem to be evolving from a place of little or no empathy for the majority of Americans, to a position of "saying" they are for the 100% of Americans and desperately reaching for analogies to convince Americans they have empathy. I don't think you can pick up on empathy in a few weeks.
